Appearance and Personality

Appearance: Riyon has a semi-tall and slender male body figure, however underneath that slenderize figure is a muscular up-put underneath his clothes that he wears on a daily basis, eventually it isn't noticed every time. He has long pastel lilac-colored hair which he ultimately ties into a half-cut ponytail. He has crystal teal-colored eyes which can turn garnet red whenever he uses his half-myth abilities. Riyon has a calming aura demeanor though he tends to be poetic with his choices.

Appearance: Riyon was born as the oldest child and son in his family lineage, eventually his family runs one of the few relaxing inns within one of the high mountain-top skirts of Wintergreen Village, a popular location where tourists can relax during their stays in the solid cold lasting winter within the Island of Enchantment. During his childhood, he was eventually young to help his parents and workers despite his appearance as a child. Still, his nature had somewhat appreciated his family and workers during their busy days.

By the time his younger sister is born, he's often seen with his parents raising the infant but mostly watches her over. Apparently, as a child, he had tiny bits of a child role as the eldest but it slowly turned into a calm and slightly wise demeanor in the present.

Riyon's personality in the present eventually holds a personality of being the typical silent kid but when being interacted with one another, he then responds in a calmer tone, eventually sounding as if there isn't a slight emotion in there, eventually he seems to know how to read the mood often sometimes, especially when handling most of his half-myth companions' chaos tendencies.

Not much of his main personality breaks that much in his daily life just to remember, especially when chaos at whatever time or day is upfront. He's more fully the kind to see how things get going more than stopping it though, but there are days that he ended up being dragged along at whatever time but mostly it doesn't bother him much with his friends.

On his normal basis of interactions, it's whether he talks normally mostly however the description of advice talking, which mostly sounds poetic and calm and is mostly relaxing to hear, eventually he rarely raises his voice and whenever he talks often is loud and audible to be heard for others such as his co-workers to hear him. And eventually, he's sometimes supportive and often chilled out on a daily basis.

His main personality may not falter, however, his aura will change depending on his interaction without expressing it. However, as a ghost-myth, his aura eventually darkens depending on its mood and atmosphere within the room. He may now show it however many can feel for the fact that he's either pissed or in fact moody, but to not pressured it further or the last thing you'll witness and feel that it is the air running cold his presence in your last minute slumber.

Understanding and very poetic sometimes, but his friends might agree that he needs to express himself a bit more.

The Merry Band

My silly Rain World characters

the journey begins with The Artist (Art) who has taken a liking to studying murals and graffiti, and making their own on the walls of everywhere. Their diet it similar to survivors, and they're a soft pastel yellow. Art travels the land in search of inspiration for their pieces, when they come across:

The Machinist (Mach 1), a slugcat that is a blue-grey color, and has six limbs. created by an iterator to maintain their can, now stuck wandering due to collapse, and more so searching for help to revive their creator who is stuck in a comatose status. Meeting Art, the two didn't get along too well at first, but with Art already traveling, the two decided to go off together. Tens of cycles passed as they crossed these lands, until they met:

The Horticulturalist (Horti), a brown and green slugcat that had grown flowers on it's back to its tail. It could only grow a specific type of flowers, specifically, the favorites of their creator. Tasked to maintain an overgrown garden, It claims it will stay until the garden can no longer be maintained. Eventually it has to leave, as an order from the iterator that created it, because things were not going too good for them and there may or may not be a poisonous deadly plant in there now. With the garden sealed off, and with Horti no longer being needed, the party now has a third member. Horti joined in search of a new purpose.

The Alchemist (Mist) is slugcat who specializes in making potions and remedies, creating medicine, stat boosting potions, even straight poison. They stalked the group until Art got incredibly sick from eating something, in which Mist revealed themselves and helped Art. Hearing their tales, and their missions (Find inspiration, find help, find purpose) Mist decided to join them. Their goal wasn't much, to simply create the ultimate potion, but they was welcomed as a healer.

Faltering Skies creates The Machinist (Mach 1) to help maintain his structure, he did plan to make more (Mach 1 couldn't do it all by themself) but something happened to slow down the process of creating more greatly. so instead he metal pipe sfx and goes into comatose. Mach 1 left the ruins in search of help, taking Skies last recorded data pearl.

Unheard Echoes takes the Horticulturalist when it stumbles into her chamber and modifies them with plant growth:tm:, specifically to grow her favorite flowers. She had a garden project going on from back when the ancients were around, but due to her other 'projects' she struggles to maintain the garden and everything else. Horti is stationed there as it is observes it is already fond of plant life. When a poisonous plant begins to invade and take over the garden, for Horti's safety Echoes removes Horti from her facility entirely, as it would not budge. Echoes now has to deal with an invasive poisonous plant that could take over her structure, and Horti is having a crisis outside.

By the time the whole group is together (Art, Mach 1, Horti, and Mist) they climb up a mountain and meet Counting Stars, who by now is not in the best condition. She has the rot, specifically terror long legs variant, she really fucked herself badly. With her few remaining functions she is able to help each scug in some way:

She sends Mach 1 away with a whole package of neurons + special neuron to give to Faltering Skies

Gives Horti a data pearl to bring back to Unheard Echoes to help clear of the quickly growing poisonous plants so she can go back to tending to the garden, but also learns that there is more out there and so much more to do

Somehow, a sample of the rot is what Mist needed for the ultimate potion

And to Art, Counting Stars herself is the inspiration it needed

Sprint 1

Brainstorming

The artists and I brainstormed some artstyle ideas, with our Pinterest board, the first mindmap result and the client meeting the week before we had a better understanding of what we wanted to make. I wouldn't personally start on the UI art quite yet as I'll base this on the art of our game rather than ideas, but I still wanted to be part of the process.

Narrative

One of my ideas was chosen during our client meeting, which meant I already had some idea of how to design the narrative. I used a template I made myself during my minor on storytelling as a base and wrote down the premise, character goal and progression goal. I used my initial idea from the brainstorming and expanded it to have more of a story.

Premise

MC (Main Character) receives a quest: All the realms in the universe are in disarray. Each realm lacks a key social skill and without it, the realm is lost. They need someone to save them and MC is the hero they need. MC is special, they are smart, empathetic and most importantly a social expert, however, what they lack is the power of confidence to go out into the world. MC needs to travel through the realms, in each realm investigate the core of the issue and teach them the social skill they lack. They meet many different creatures along the way and as MC teaches others they also gain valuable insights themselves and grow their confidence. After the realm is saved MC is rewarded with a key/charm/token, upon collecting all they’ve fulfilled their quest and become the new keeper of the universe. Creatures in all moral alignments attend the ceremony and can tell MC how they impacted their lives.

I wanted to use the Hero's Journey for our story as it's a tested and true method for storytelling. I knew the first level "Introduction" would always be level 1, which would serve as ACT 1, but the other levels could be shuffled around in any order depending on the curriculum of the school. This means ACT 2 would consist of the remaining 4 levels and ACT 3 would be the aftermath and conclusion of the game.

I started on the next level on the list: Giving and Receiving Compliments. I researched how people generally struggle with compliment giving and receiving and how to remedy these difficulties. In this early phase, I wanted to only make a setup so I could receive feedback from the team and our project lead Fin Rovers.

Over the holiday, we received documents of the curriculum from our client that would be used alongside our game. I was able to make some iterations based on this, but my own research already fit the curriculum very well, so I didn't have to make many adjustments.

We held a team meeting to talk about the first concept art and game mechanics, here I was also able to share what I worked on so far regarding the narrative. After the meeting, I talked with Fin to implement some ideas he had as well: collectable sidekicks and a boss in each level.

Learning goals

Aside from the Narrative and brainstorming I also worked on my learning goals a lot this sprint, After receiving feedback from Hester and talking about my goals in the first landing with Rob, I asked for help formulating what I really wanted to achieve during IMT&S from Rob. After this meeting, I felt more confident about my learning goals and was able to address Hester's feedback as well. My adjusted goals are better measurable and give me achievable goals to work towards.

My extended learning goals are:

During IMT&S, my main goal is to increase my employability as a narrative designer by gaining experience and improving my craft. I want to do this by deepening my experience in narrative design and implementing it in serious games. I will develop a clear understanding of the objectives and goals of the serious game and apply this to the narrative design. I want to apply the hero’s journey to improve the immersive experience of the user. Finally, I want to research how narrative design influences gameplay.

During IMT&S, my main goal is to improve my UI/graphic design using Adobe Illustrator and learn to apply it in the context of a game. I will do this by learning how to create fitting UI designs for different products. I want to learn how to match UI design to the artist’s art direction by communicating and collaborating. I will go through the steps of moodboarding, stylesheet and designing in Adobe Illustrator. I additionally want to work on the logo design for the game using customized typography.

During IMT&S, my main goal is to become proficient in using Figma as a tool for UX design. I will follow an interactive Figma course from Befront and a Figma UX design course by a professional UX designer. I will complete the assignments and projects provided in these courses to deepen my understanding of UX design principles, Figma's features, and best practices. This will enable me to efficiently create high-quality UX designs using Figma that I can apply to IMT&S projects and any work I do in the future.

During IMT&S, my main goal is that I want to streamline my work process: work smarter, not harder. In previous projects I’ve had the tendency to overwork myself at the cost of my health and sanity, therefore I want to identify where I go overboard by analyzing my work routine to find where this negatively impacts my health. For this, I will look into how to implement a hybrid workflow that doesn’t jeopardise a qualitative project outcome. I need to learn to set boundaries for myself to protect myself.

Overall I accomplished a lot this Sprint and the team and I made some great progress for BeeYou.

Ten Years Later

Mirabel walked around the second floor and woke her family up for the day. “How is Mirabel so happy this early?” Victor asked Camilo as they walked down the stairs to the kitchen, Camilo shrugged. “Isa! Mariano sent another gift!” julieta told Isabela as she sat down next to Victoria who read her book and rolled her eyes at Mariano’s gift along with isa. After the madrigals had a quick breakfast they all started to walk into the town to help out before they needed to set up for antonino's gift ceremony.

“What are you doing today?” Camilo asked victor as they walked next to each other “Just gonna visit senor gomez so he could talk to his husband. You?” ever since the two boys were born they are always together. “Babysitting! But hey after we’re done wanna play soccer (football) afterwards?” Victor nodded at his cousin as they entered the town.

“Oh my gosh it’s them!” three of the town’s kids said excitedly as they watched the other madrigal’s enter the town. “What are the gifts?” a little girl named Alejandra said excitedly to the others.

“I don’t remember all the gifts!” a little girl named Cecilia told Alejandra. Victoria smiled and waved at the three kids while walking past.

“But I don't know who is who!” Alejandra exclaimed. “Alright, alright relax!” Mirabel told the kids while chuckling. “It’s physically impossible to relax!” “Tell us everything, what are your powers?” Cecilia asked mirabel. “JUST TELL US WHAT EVERYONE CAN DO!” the little boy named Juancho told Mirabel while on a coffee rush.

“And that’s why coffee’s for grown ups!” Mirabel smiled and led the kids to the moural the townspeople had painted of the family. 

“My tia pepa, her mood affects the weather! When she’s unhappy, well the temperature gets weird” Mirabel pointed to pepa who had a cloud over her head as she worried about antonio.

“My tio bruno-!” Mirabel got cut by the people walking by “We don’t talk about bruno!” Mirabel and the children looked and went back to Bruno's part. “They said he saw the future, one day he disappeared!” 

“And that’s my mom julieta, here's her deal whoa! The truth is she can heal you with a meal! Her recipes are remedies for real! If you're impressed, imagine how I feel-MOM!” Mirabel laughed as julieta kissed mirabel on her cheek.

“The home of the family madrigal! Hey coming through! I know it sounds a bit fantastical and magical! But I'm part of the family madrigal!” Mirabel led the kids around the town before she stopped and told the kids about the madrigal’s who married into the family.

“These guys fell in love with the family madrigal! And now they’re a part of the family madrigal!” Mirabel pointed to Felix, Agustin and y/n who were talking outside the bakery. “So yeah, Tio felix married pepa! My dad married julieta and my tia y/n married bruno!” Mirabel explained to the kids.

“That’s how abuela became an abuela!” The kids watched as Mirabel explained the family.

“Wait, who's a sister and who’s a cousin?” Alejandra asked confused as they watched the madrigal grandkids show off their gifts. “There’s so many people!” Cecilia said as more kids joined in on listening to Mirabel explain the family. “How do you keep them all straight?” Juancho asked. 

“Okay, okay, okay, okay so many kids in our house! So let’s turn the sound up! You know why I think it’s time for a grandkid round up!” Mirabel told the kids.

“Cousin Dolores can hear a pin drop!” Dolores walked up to Mirabel and cupped her ear. “Camilo shapeshifts!” Mirabel pointed as Camilo shifted into the baby's mother. “Antonio gets his gift today!” Alma fixed Antonio's ceremony suit.

“The twins, Victor and Victoria! Victor can see spirits!” The kids watched Victor walk around with an elderly man, talking to him as he kept looking over to nobody. Mirabel led the kids to the bridge where you could see victoria sitting by the water writing in her journal. “Victoria can control the river!” Victoria smiled and lifted up water into the shape of a flower. 

“My older sisters, Isabela and luisa!” Mirabel pointed to her sister’s “One graceful, perfect in every way!” Isabela walked into Alma who smiled and hugged her “Grows a flower, the town goes wild!” isabela spun around making flowers grow all around her. “She’s the perfect golden child!” Mirabel sighed but quickly moved onto Luisa who lifted up the bridge her and kids were on. 

“And luisa is super strong, the beauty and the bronze do no wrong! That's life in the family madrigal! Now you know the family madrigal! Where the people are fantastical and magical. That’s who we are in the family madrigal!” Mirabel smiled and went to walk away from the kids before they asked about her. “Adios! Oh!” Alejandra stood in front of mirabel. “But what’s YOUR gift?” Mirabel let out an awkward laugh. “Well I gotta go, the life of a madrigal! But now you all know the family madrigal! I didn’t mean for this to get autobiographical! So let’s review the family madrigal!” Mirabel tried to run but the kids followed her.

“What about mirabel?” the kids asked as they followed her. “It starts with Abuela, and then Tía Pepa, she handles the weather!”

“My mom Julieta can make you feel better with just one arepa! My dad Agustín, well he's accident-prone but he means well!” “What about mirabel?”  “Hey, you said you wanna know what everyone does, I got sisters and cousins and my primo Camilo won't stop until he makes you smile today!” camilo tried to distract the kids but they continued to follow mirabel

“My cousin Dolores can hear this whole forest a mile away!” mirabel pointed to dolores who was at casita, helping decorate the house

“Look! It's Mister Mariano, hey you can marry my sister if you wanna! But between you and me, she's kind of a prima donna yo, I've said too much!” Mirabel grabbed mariano who tried to walk with isabela, who was walking back to casita with y/n and victoria.

“And thank you but I really gotta go!” “WHAT ABOUT MIRABEL!” “My family's amazing! And I'm in my family so-!” “Mirabel!” she sighed “Well…” 

“MIRABEL! What are you doing?” Alma asked as she watched Mirabel with the kids outside casita. “They were just asking about the family!” Mirabel shrugged at alma. “SHE WAS ABOUT TO TELL US ABOUT HER SUPER AWESOME GIFT!” Alejandra yelled excitedly.

“Oh Mirabel didn’t get a gift!” Dolores let out a small squeak before she walked away from the doorway to go and help decorate.

“Lift it higher! Higher!” Alma ordered. ”Hey good job out there!” Camilo told Victor as the two boys walked up the stairs and helped set up. “Camilo, we need another jose!” Camilo immediately shifted into Jose and helped hold up a banner.

“Hi mama!” Victor told y/n as he approached y/n who was fixing the flowers isabela grew on the railings. “Hi vic!” y/n smiled and hugged victor who gladly hugged her back. “How are you doing mama? I mean since it’s the first ceremony since…” Victor looked around before talking to y/n. “Since pa left…” Victor looked at his mama with concern, Y/n was about to answer him but Victoria running over cut her off. “Don’t bring him up victor! It’s ok mama! Here come help me and isa with the flowers!” Victoria glared at her older brother as she led her mother away from victor. Since Bruno ‘left’ the twins had become protective of their mama whenever someone brought up their dad. 

Especially victoria, like her tia pepa she didn’t like it whenever someone brought up bruno infront of y/n, scared of how she would react when they brought up his name.

Y/n laughed a little as she watched mirabel be annoyed with isabela being perfect once again as she gave pepa and felix more flowers since pepa’s hurricane messed up the others. “And I'm not in the way! You Are-!” Y/n cringed as she watched Mirabel run into the wall. “Tia!” isabela ran over and walked with victoria and y/n outside.

“How are you doing today tia!” Isabela asked cautiously, while looking at victoria. Y/n chuckled.

“I’m doing okay isa!” isabela smiled at y/n as they helped decorate outside.

After a couple hours of cleaning up casita it was finally time for Antonio's ceremony. Y/n helped Victoria change into another pair of clothes after victor ‘accidentally’ made victoria drop the water she was holding onto her clothes. “I can’t believe he did that to me!” Victoria said as she searched for her shoes. “Let it go mija! I’m sure he didn’t mean to.” y/n told victoria as she held up the shoes, victoria was looking for. 

“Alright let’s go out there!” y/n told victoria as she led victoria out of her room and into the courtyard where everyone was.

“Victoria!” Violet ran over and hugged her cousin. “Violet!” The girls hugged each other as they walked away from their mothers to catch up on a book they were reading together.

“How are you doing y/n?” Veronica asked her sister as they hugged. Y/n chuckled “Why does everyone keep asking me that! I’m doing okay!” Veronica gave y/n a look “i’m not just gonna randomly burst out crying cause of…him not being here” y/n looked around making sure victoria or pepa couldn’t hear.

Veronica went to talk but got interrupted by Alma announcing it was time for the ceremony. Y/n got led towards the rest of the madrigal’s by victor and victoria.

“Fifty years ago, in our darkest moment, this candle blessed us with a miracle and the greatest honor of our family has been to use our blessings to serve this beloved community. Tonight we come together once more as another steps into the light to make us proud.” Casita had pulled back the flower curtain and made a red carpet type pattern on the tile before fixing the lights to make a spotlight on antonio.

Everyone clapped as little Antonio stood there looking nervous. Casita tried to nudge him a bit forward but he still didn’t move. Instead he turned to the side and looked over and stuck his hand out “I need you!” was all he said. Mirabel walked over to Antonio and held his hand. Everyone gasped at mirabel, The madrigal’s looked and watched as mirabel and antonio stood there for a second before she told him something and got him to start walking up the stairs towards alma and his door.

Once there Mirabel moved to the side where Felix and Pepa stood. Alma bent down a little as she held the candle out to Antonio “Will you use your gift to honor our miracle, will you serve this community and strengthen our hope?” Antonio nodded and touched the candle. Alma smiled down at him and moved to the side so Antonio could walk to his door. Everyone held their breath as he reached for the doorknob. Y/n had the twins holding onto each of her arms.

Everyone watched as his door glowed brighter as he touched the knob. A bird flew and landed on his arm. Antonio let out a gasp and nodded at the bird “uh huh, uh huh I understand you! Of course they can come!” The bird let out a screech which made other animals come running into casita. The animals ran up the stairs and towards antonio.

Antonio’s door revealed itself, it had Antonio on the door surrounded by animals. Alma let out a sigh of relief and walked over to the stairs “WE HAVE A NEW GIFT!” Everyone cheered, some people let fireworks go off outside. Y/n walked over to Dolores and looked at her silently asking if she was ok.

Dolores gave y/n a nod and a smile as y/n walked with her up the stairs to Antonio's new room.

Thank you. I don’t feel like I can take full credit for the colours. It’s based on a beautiful photo taken at twilight. I created a colour pallet based on it to get that rather soft set of colours. I’m glad the piece over all reads well as I by this point I’ve mainly focused on getting the composition right. Details are to come. I hope I’ll be able to keep some of the blurred bits. Same as sharper contrast in colours, dark and light draw the eye, details do the same.

benny’s rwby rewrite: team RWBY redesigns

hello again! in honor of me actually getting some schoolwork done and subsequently having the time to rewatch the first volume of rwby for writing purposes, i thought i’d get out of the way some design notes that have been living in my head for the main girls. with how important colors and motif are in rwby as a whole, i thought that a little more care could be taken. i’ll go into the volume 1 designs most of all, and outline any consistent changes within the character’s notes. i’ll also go into why i’m changing what i’m changing.

with that, my thoughts as always will be under the cut!

ruby rose:

we’re starting strong with ruby’s design, and god do i have some strong opinions about this girl. let it be known that i actually like ruby’s clothing design: i think i’ve mentioned that i think the contrast of a fluffy petticoat and platform boots with a giant scythe and killing monsters is really interesting. that being said, there’s some fucked up geneology happening in the rose-xiao long family.

a big issue i have with ruby and her family members is the fact that despite the fact that yang and ruby are related through taiyang, neither of them have inherited his skintone. you’d think that with how literally their phenotypes are taken, that ruby wouldn’t be white as snow. with how low-contrast ruby’s design is as a whole, i think that her having darker skin would be welcome. adding the bonus of holy shit, a dark-skinned mixed girl is the protagonist makes me really biased toward this. complexion-wise, she should be somewhere between summer and taiyang, but still visibly darker than someone like weiss.

her hair being naturally black and red is perfectly okay for me. i think that it looks nice, and there’s a lot she can do with it. i can’t really complain about it being in her eyes after gushing over her combat cupcake skirt.

what i can complain about is her lack of pockets. like, she only has one little pouch to carry god knows what in. is she really expecting to be able to carry all of her ammunition in that one little pouch? god no. swap out the pouch for some kind of bag, or better yet, a bandolier of some kind to serve the same asymmetrical purpose that dingy little pocket does.  

finally, her eyes. in my ideal world, i would have done something a bit more dramatic to set ruby’s white eyes apart from, say, neo’s grey eyes. maybe making her pupils lighter than black, grey, or even just white. the animators made blake’s pupils smaller to set her apart, why not give ruby’s eyes a little something-something? also, with the contrasting color of her design being either a silver or a white, having her silver eyes be one of the lightest elements of her design is really aesthetically pleasing to me.

weiss schnee:

i’m going to be completely real here, i like weiss’ original design a lot. they really leaned into the weiss part of her: the girl’s white. she’s white as fuck. her dress is white, her little bolero is white, her shoes are white, it’s all white, with just a touch of icy pastel blue to make her feel more cold than sterile. i love it. i’m also a big fan of the other, brighter colors in her design, but i think the introduction of red should have waited a bit longer.

in her introductory outfit, the inside of her bell-sleeved bolero is this blinding, fully-saturated red that is really distracting to the eye. i’d replace this with a blue, sort of like the color of her eyes, and do the same with that little doily piece at the dip in her neckline. i also think that she should have been kept much more symmetrical, the most symmetrical of any of the cast. move that side pony to the center back of her head, put one of those little pouches on each hip, and have her stow her weapon across her back.

also, this isn’t even necessarily a problem, but i think weiss would have benefited from a much more conservative shoe. knowing the schnee family, i don’t they would have found it appropriate for an heiress to be running around in platform heels. i think that pointe shoes, or something familiar, would be really interesting, especially in conjunction with her ballerina aesthetic. her scar can definitely stay as it is; i think it’s both subtle enough to break her symmetry nicely, but also symbolically strong.

also, of all of the characters to give a dramatic haircut, it should have been fucking weiss. i’m all for bi bob blake, but imagine the dramatic potential of weiss just chopping straight through that shit to declare herself independent from her shitdick father. also, i think her hair should be naturally brown, like jacques’ is. the narravite element of her having to tirelessly keep up appearances is really good to me.

blake belladonna:

blake lives in a weird space for me. on the one hand, i would love for her to have dark skin as well, to sort of even the scale in terms of complexion. however, having a dark-skinned woman with literal animal ears being kind of problematic isn’t lost on me. in my opinion, the issue lies in blake being uniquely dark-skinned: in conjunction with ruby and yang, i think that her being dark-skinned is a little less uncomfortable. i think it would also remedy the problem of most of the dark-skinned characters in rwby being either dead or evil, so we’ll make her a bit tan.

with that out of the way, i also really like blake’s design, but she could certainly use some work. she, like many of the other team members, are pretty low-contrast save for the white tube-top thing she had going on. i think the white in her design should be toned down, either to a grey or a purple color. i also think that her arm situation needs to either be long gloves or wrapped-up straps, not both. that motif isn’t anywhere else in her design, and most of the lines are clean and smooth, not all jaggedy like the straps are. keep those bracelets on her upper arms, and make those gloves of hers marksman’s gloves. 

i also think that she should wear thigh-high boots. this isn’t just my bias showing; something about the way those boot cuffs cut off the line of her legs is just really irritating to me. have them attach to that swooping vest situation, this is anime, it doesn’t matter how she’d get into them logistically. also, that gradient situation on her is just terrible. having seen a lot of art of her without that gradient has converted me, her design is just so much more clean-looking without it, and blake really reads as someone who should have a much less complex design, opting for clean lines and nice shapes instead of the frills and textures someone like weiss has.

yang xiao long:

i’m gonna start with something i’ve already mentioned: yang should be brown. the fact that she not nary a fucking hair of melanin from her dad is a crime. ideal yang is brown, but so is her hair to start out. i had the idea of rather than her hair being naturally yellow, starting out brown and being bleached in streaks by the heat of her semblance, and as the show goes on, it gets more and more yellow, and eventually even platinum blonde.

with that out of the way, i do not like yang’s initial design. the puffed sleeves don’t make any sense with her as a character, that weird train situation she has on her belt is an affront to god, and why is she just wearing spats? i think that of all of the people to tear, or hell, burn the sleeves clean off of her jacket, it’d be yang. yang is a fuck sleeves kind of girl. she’s a “i flexed the sleeves clean off of my shit” kind of girl. also, she’s gonna wear a tube top and hot pants, but she’s gonna button up her jacket? fucking what? unbutton that shit. she’s a lesbian vest kinda girl. she can keep her little scarf, and her tube top is a look, so it can stay.

i actually really like yang’s boots. i think they compliment her really nicely, and she’s enough of a brute fighting style-wise to warrant those chunky monsters. the mismatched socks and little scarf are cute touches too, but i think the scarf should start out red. the purple can come in later. addressing the spats (bike shorts? spanx?) situation, there’s a very simple solution: give yang jorts. not even a fucking joke, give the woman jorts. look me in the eye and tell me that yang “t-shirt as a bandana” xiao long would not wear jorts. you can’t. it’s impossible. she would wear neon yellow jorts with that ungodly belt situation and i will not compromise this. the overalls she wears in atlas? also jorts. mistral? black, sure, but fucking jorts nonetheless. jort xiao long will outlive me, so help me god.

... i got a bit carried away there, but i hope you enjoyed my thoughts! i may at some point get around to actually drawing these redesigns, so keep an eye out for that in future!

I'm imagining Bucky finding out that Steve no longer draws. He decides to remedy this oversight by leaving sketch books, pencils, markers, oil pastels and pens all around their apartment. He didn't attend all those art classes with Steve for nothing, nor did he model and pose for the punk to have those skills turn rusty. He intentionally finds the best light and stands there until Steve notices. He doesn't care how ridiculous he looks. He just wants to see that little guy from Brooklyn again.

The smell of cinnamon and cloves filled the hallway of the third floor of Fox Tower. Andrew followed his nose to the girls’ room, and Neil followed Andrew.

In the kitchen was organised chaos; Renee rolling out dough on the counter, Dan pulling out a cooked batch from the oven, Matt icing cooled gingerbread men, powdered sugar smeared across his cheek. Nicky and Allison were also there, Allison sitting on the breakfast bar reading a magazine, and Nicky doing little else other than getting in the way by the looks of things.

Matt looked up at Neil and Andrew’s entrance. “Oh good, you guys can help now, me and Dan are going to the movies and Renee needs happy helpers.”

Andrew rolled up his sleeves, putting his armbands on full display. “How about indifferent helpers,” he offered.

“I’ll take it,” said Renee.

“What are we helping with?” Neil asked.

“Cookie making,” Renee said, then took in Neil’s confused expression. “For the bake sale?”

Neil knew about the bake sale; all the PSU sport’s teams were putting one on to raise money for the children’s hospital over the holidays. For some reason he hadn’t considered they’d have to actually…bake stuff.

“Ah. That.”

“We’ve got it down to an art-form,” Renee said cheerily. “A fine-tuned machine.”

“Where does Allison fit into this assembly line?” Andrew asked.

“I’m project manager,” Allison said without looking up from her magazine.

“And Nicky?”

“Quality control,” he said with a grin, picking up one of the finished cookies and biting off a leg.

“Hey, quit eating the product, this is for charity,” Matt said, swatting Nicky’s hand away.

“You’re absolutely right,” Nicky said in a faux-apologetic tone, holding his swiped gingerbread man out to Matt. “Here, this one’s an amputee. We can make him little gingerbread crutches.”

Matt scowled, but Renee smiled patiently. “Just eat it, Nicky. But no more, okay?”

“Scout’s honour,” he said solemnly, hand over heart. Neil was pretty sure that wasn’t how the boy scout salute actually went, but whatever.

“Matt, come on,” Dan said. “You need to shower before we go, you’re covered in powdered sugar.”

“What?” His hands flew to his face. “Where?”

“Right there.”

He wiped at his face, smearing it even worse and adding some more for good measure. Dan sighed with fond exasperation and took his hand. “...Yeah, you got it, babe. Let’s go.”

They said their goodbyes and went to get ready in Matt’s suite, leaving Andrew and Neil to take their places. Neil stood in the middle of the kitchen for a moment, looking at all the bare cookies that still needed to be decorated. He’d never felt more out of his depth, and he’d been involved in a mob war.

Andrew flicked his nose lightly. “They’re cookies, Neil. They won’t bite.”

“That’s funny,” Neil deadpanned. “You’re funny.”

“I’m a regular comedian.”

Renee swooped over and handed Andrew a piping bag. “Have you decorated gingerbread men before?” she asked.

He shrugged. “Once or twice.”

“Great. Do whatever you want, just within reason, okay? Nothing rude.”

“Renee, who do you take me for?”

She just smiled serenely and Andrew headed over to the decoration station. Renee turned to Neil.

“In a couple of minutes, a timer’s going to go off, and when it does I need you to take the baked cookies out of the oven, and put in that last batch of uncooked ones. Can you do that for me?”

It sounded easy enough. “Got it.”

While he was waiting for the timer to go off, Neil washed up the dishes that had been soaking in the sink. Allison and Nicky had now moved over to the sitting area, and Allison was painting Nicky’s nails.

“So you two are really just not gonna help at all, huh,” Neil remarked.

“I’d love to, but like...my nails,” Nicky said, wiggling his now pastel orange fingertips Neil’s way.

“I’m really better in a moral support kind of role,” Allison added, looking up at Renee with a smirk. “Right, babe?”

“You’re lucky you’re so pretty,” Renee retorted, and Allison snorted a laugh.

The timer went off, and Neil removed the cookies and set them on the side, then put the new ones in and reset the timer.

He dried the dishes, then moved the baked cookies to a cooling rack.

“What now?” he asked Renee.

She looked up from decorating. “Now you can grab a piping bag and come do some decorating.”

He’d kind of been hoping to avoid this part, but he went over to have a look.

Renee was giving all of her gingerbread people festive jumpers with patterns that looked like they should take ages to do but somehow she was speeding through it, and they all looked identical.

There was a bunch of finished ones on the other counter that Matt and Dan must have done. They were all pretty basic, with smiley faces and buttons, reminiscent of ones Neil had seen in stores. He was fairly confident that he could recreate something similar.

Andrew hadn’t said a word since Renee had sent him over to start decorating, and he was now hunched over a cookie with his piping bag as he worked, the tip of his tongue poking out in concentration. Neil smiled and went over.

“Can I see?”

Andrew shifted back so Neil could have a look. The gingerbread Andrew was currently icing wasn’t yet finished, but it had the outline of a Foxes jersey on, black hair, and a tiny little queen chess piece on its cheek. 

Neil grinned. “It’s Kevin.”

“It will be,” Andrew said, and continued icing. Neil looked past him at the ones Andrew had already finished.

There was a Renee, complete with her pastel dipped hair, and a Wymack with his tribal tattoos and a whistle around his neck. And next to them, with auburn hair and a number 10 jersey, was a Neil.

“You made a gingerbread me,” he said with quiet awe. The icing on the Neil cookie was the driest; Andrew had clearly decorated this one first.

“I did,” Andrew said, without looking up. 

“You’re making the Foxes.”

Andrew sighed. “What’s your point.”

“My point is that you could have decorated these however you wanted, and you specifically chose to make us. Your team.”

He looked up. “It’s not my fault I have to spend all my time with you assholes.”

“Yes it is,” Neil said, smirking. “You love us.”

“I tolerate you.”

“What’s going on?” Nicky called over.

“Andrew’s making the Foxes as gingerbread men because he loves us,” Neil replied, without dropping Andrew’s gaze. The corner of Andrew’s mouth twitched, almost a smile.

“Awww, Andrew!” Nicky exclaimed. “Make mine the prettiest.”

Andrew waved a hand at his cousin, agreement or dismissal, it was hard to say. Quietly, just for Neil, he said, “You’re a real pain in the ass.”

“I know.” Neil grabbed a piping bag filled with black royal icing and got to work.

Andrew paused in his own decorating to peer over Neil’s shoulder, and it didn’t take long for him to sigh when he realised what Neil was doing.

“You’re so predictable,” he drawled.

“You started it.”

Neil finished outlining gingerbread-Andrew’s second armband and hurriedly filled it in. “Renee, where’s the yellow, I need to do his hair.”

It took him ages to finish this one cookie, but he finally had a passable Andrew, complete with a tiny cigarette. He put it next to gingerbread-Neil, and Andrew snapped a picture of them with his phone.

“For Dan’s photo wall?” Neil asked dryly.

“Beats getting my own photo taken,” Andrew said with a shrug. “I wonder if I can use this for my student ID...”

Nicky came up behind them and got a good look at their creations. “Oh my god, I want the Kevin one. And look at the little gingerbread-yous! They’re adorable. You guys are adorable.”

“We’re also finished now,” Andrew said, brushing his hand against Neil’s. “Your turn, Nicky. And Allison.”

“Oh what? I’ve already been here all afternoon!” Nicky complained.

“And what a help you’ve been,” Renee said, her tone not betraying any sarcasm, but her smile definitely did.

“Yeah, come on,” Allison said, finally deigning to come over now the bulk of the work was done. “I want to make a prettier me than Andrew did. Although,” she allowed, “that’s not bad.”

“Maybe if stick-ball doesn’t work out I have a promising future in niche cookie decorating then,” he said. “Renee, we’re out.”

“Thanks for your help, guys!” she said with a wave, and Andrew took Neil’s hand properly, leading him out and up to the roof.

It was cold up there, but it wasn’t so bad huddled together, sharing cigarettes and kisses.

“I can’t believe I got away with only decorating one cookie,” Neil said.

“It did take you, like, half an hour.”

“Still. You did loads.”

Andrew shrugged. “In fairness, yours was the best one.”

Neil took Andrew’s hand, warming it between his own. “It was, wasn’t it?”

Andrew pressed a kiss to Neil’s jaw then leaned his head on his shoulder. “Don’t get cocky, Neil.”

He squeezed Andrew’s hand. “Too late.”
